How to Groom the Border Terrier and the Papillon

Grooming The Border Terrier

The Border Terrier as shown in the picture does need grooming. Their top coat is harsh and grows to a stage of needing "Stripping".

Never allow anyone to put electric clippers on it, as this will soften the coat and it will grow "wooley". Always use finger and thumb or a stripping knife.

A Border Terriers coat usually needs stripping  twice yearly, you can tell when it's ready when it, looks long and shaggy and the hair starts to part  down the centre of the dogs back.

As a qualified tutor, I can teach you to look after  your own dog yourself, it can give you great pleasure and save you taking your dog to a groomer, which could cost on average £30, although this varies across the country.

All our puppies are offered their first strip by  me as part of their puppy pack.

GROOMING THE PAPILLON

The Papillons coat is a silky fine coat. To keep
it looking it's best, doesn't take alot of work
but does require a regular brush to keep the
knots at bay.

A good brush to use is a bristle brush, as this
will get through the coat but will limit spliting
it. Do not use a comb as this will split the coat.

Pay attention to the ear fringes, tail, under the
elbows and trousers as these are the main areas
to knot up.  From time to time you will want to
give you Papillon a bath, make sure you brush the
coat through first, use a moisturising shampoo,
a conditioner and thoroughly rinse after.
Towel dry, then blow dry.
